If only there was a generational essayist who wrote at length about the various societal impacts of only engaging with, only consuming, content that flattered your self image and preexisting worldview. Alas.

@ovid_returns raises a great point. You need to take Defense Against the Dark Arts before engaging earnestly with any of the writers I listed in this thread! Being able to critique your worldview doesn't give the author carte blanche to install theirs! https://x.com/ovid_returns/status/1778102087513178332

@ConradBastable I wish I'd done like Curzi when I first came across TLP, but I was young and dumb let his writings gaslight me for years that I was a fundamentally broken person. Lulie has a great thread on this: https://x.com/metaLulie/status/1343336497819357185

Most humanities education focuses on “critical” reading, aka delivering a critique is a sign of intellectual rigor. Result: if you present a critique of society your audience cannot answer, you’ll end up with leagues of young followers whether you want them or not. (This is bad for you if you become a follower)
MC_Enthusiast@Laserpig_Utopia:
This isn't really relevant to the beef, but this is a nontrivial task with genuine dangers for anyone who cannot maintain a separate frame from the writer (e.g. most people), especially for persuasive writers which I would say TLP certainly can be.

@ovid_returns Of course much of his writing is a little more…like this. But hey. If you can laugh at it, it’s not such a bad interlude between bits of prescience.
