Are we all watchmakers?

When I get them to do their homework, am I having them spend their childhood learning to solve Rubik's cubes?

Parenthood puts a level of indirection in how you view the future. I only have care about the future of these two particular people, but that entails that I have to care about the state of the whole world, because they'll be living in it.

The narrowness of that focus makes it easy to forget that I'm not doing this alone. Everyone is trying to figure out the same thing. We'll be doing it together, and that may be the most comforting thing.
