2023-12-20They (a) show you in an undeniable and unforgettable way that everything you do, from career choices to conduct in relationships, is in search of and response to feelings,
(b) that everything you seek — the full spectrum of experience from bliss to peace — can be found within you,
(c) counter the cultural narrative, pleasure and addiction are two very different things,
(d) mental tension, a subtle form of internal violence faster than thought, is at the root of all your problems,
(e) the solution is to learn to recursively surrender this tension at lower and lower levels of your mental habits
(f) and once you do, a new mentality of abundance and clarity of your own nervous system affords new flexibility and sustainability in living out your deepest values and meaning-making, from prosocial behavior to delayed gratification
All this is doable because the jhanas are a *feeling* meditation that, like yoga nidra and hypnosis, appear to work with your subconscious directly.
It’s like checking out a feature branch, solving a bug, and shipping the code back to production: when wielded correctly, new mental habits last permanently off the cushion.
And because you can’t crave a jhana and get into one, it’s like a zero trust cryptographic proof: you have to learn to surrender at each step of the way rather than develop clinging. Each new jhana requires subtler proof.
Together, this letting-go-requirement and personality change make for a great launch pad to other practices, from Western psychotherapy to other forms of spiritual development (eg nondual).
There’s a reason people like @shamilch and @nickcammarata have said it’s up there with AI and longevity as one of the most important, untapped secrets on the planet right now. I know of few things with such an importance, tractability, and neglect profile.

2023-11-09I’ve talked to dozens of software businesses in the last two months. There’s a wide open opportunity to buy $1m - $5m ARR, profitable software businesses.
More:
My job is to help bootstrapped software companies sell their business, so naturally I talk to a lot of software companies
Many of these end up being too small for us (our sweet spot is $8m-$25m ARR), but in talking to them I’ve learned a lot about the buyer universe for these companies
Basically, if you’re a $1m - $5m ARR profitable software business with decent metrics, you’re likely worth an exit, but there’s fewer buyers for you
A bit larger and you are in great shape. At $10m ARR, there are a TON of software funds that will buy your business. This size is right at the beginning of being large enough to be a “platform” investment for them. Level Equity, Serent Capital, Marlin Equity, Banneker, and many more will take a serious look. Some might even dip down and buy an $8m ARR business
But there’s a gap in the buyer universe for smaller than this. A few reasons why:
1. These companies are (often) lower quality. Smaller companies don’t have strong management, repeatable internal processes and multiple sales channels. Sometimes they have 1-2 customers that make up half their revenue. Sometimes the founder does 7 different jobs, or is the only sales person. Nonetheless, they aren’t high quality.
2. The small size (“subscale”) makes it difficult to attract talent. If you’re a F100 company, or a startup with $50m in the bank, paying top dollar to executives to solve big, important problems is reasonable. For a company with $4m ARR, it’s unreasonable. Because of the scale, you often can’t attract high quality talent.
3. PE funds - the most reliable buyer - naturally move up market. Imagine you’re a PE fund: you raise a $400m fund, make 6 investments of $65m each, and they perform well. What’s your next move? It’s likely to raise a $600m fund - LPs are happy, and you can make more money with larger funds. Now with that $600m fund you still need to make 6 investments, but now they are at $100m each. Do this a few times and it’s easy to see how PE funds naturally gravitate to larger businesses. It takes a lot of discipline to stay at the same level.
“But large competitors in my industry want to buy us”. This is a common misconception
I’d say something like 60-80%+ of large corporations are just plain bad at acquisitions. Prime example: we chatted with a company that was trying to sell to a well-known tech giant and it required 3 board meetings (once per quarter) to make a decision. 9 months!
This is why it’s so important to have an understanding of private equity funds (or PE-backed strategic): the know how to buy companies
Anyway, the conclusion is this: there are a lot of $1m - $5m ARR businesses that have great qualities about them, even if they aren’t perfect. If you have a competitive advantage to overcome the imperfections, there’s a real opportunity for good acquisitions

2023-09-15The latest paper from @salesforce AI, et al. discovers a new prompt called Chain of Density (CoD) that produces more dense and human-preferable summaries compared to vanilla GPT-4.
I gave it a try for a few articles and it's really solid. Pasted it here if you want to try it 👇
---
Article: {{ ARTICLE }}
You will generate increasingly concise, entity-dense summaries of the above article.
Repeat the following 2 steps 5 times.
Step 1. Identify 1-3 informative entities (";" delimited) from the article which are missing from the previously generated summary.
Step 2. Write a new, denser summary of identical length which covers every entity and detail from the previous summary plus the missing entities.
A missing entity is:
- relevant to the main story,
- specific yet concise (5 words or fewer),
- novel (not in the previous summary),
- faithful (present in the article),
- anywhere (can be located anywhere in the article).
Guidelines:
- The first summary should be long (4-5 sentences, ~80 words) yet highly non-specific, containing little information beyond the entities marked as missing. Use overly verbose language and fillers (e.g., "this article discusses") to reach ~80 words.
- Make every word count: rewrite the previous summary to improve flow and make space for additional entities.
- Make space with fusion, compression, and removal of uninformative phrases like "the article discusses".
- The summaries should become highly dense and concise yet self-contained, i.e., easily understood without the article.
- Missing entities can appear anywhere in the new summary.
- Never drop entities from the previous summary. If space cannot be made, add fewer new entities.
Remember, use the exact same number of words for each summary.
Answer in JSON. The JSON should be a list (length 5) of dictionaries whose keys are "Missing_Entities" and "Denser_Summary".

2023-08-18The oceans contain enough fusion fuel to power our current civilization for 65 billion years.
If we assume compounding growth of 2%, how long will it last?
Fusion: 1060 years
Solar: 460 years
Let's dig into the physics of our energy economy.
(warning: math ahead).
Nuclear fusion is how the sun produces energy, taking light elements like hydrogen and fusing them into heavier elements like helium. This releases the energy we receive as sunshine.
Every water molecule has two hydrogen atoms. About one in every 6420 hydrogen atoms has an extra neutron attached, this isotope of hydrogen is called deuterium.
Burning one gram of deuterium via fusion releases the same energy as burning 83,300 gallons of gasoline. The energy-per-mass of nuclear fuels is astounding, and is millions of times greater than carbon fuels.
Gasoline: 45x10^6 J/kg
Deuterium: 8.5x10^14 J/kg
Total fusion energy stored in the worlds oceans:
Let's go through the numbers together to see how much fusion fuel we have on the planet, using joules for energy and kilograms for mass.
Mass of all the earth's oceans: 1.4x10^21 kg
Mass of water in the oceans: 1.3x10^21 kg
(we remove the 35g/L of salt)
Each water molecule has two hydrogen atoms, but hydrogen is a lot lighter than oxygen. So, water by-mass is only 11% hydrogen (H).
Mass of H in the oceans: 1.43x10^20 kg
Mass of deuterium in that H: 4.46x10^16 kg
Fusion-energy stored in oceans: 3.8x10^31 Joules
That's about 500 times the kinetic energy of the moon, or seven million billion Minute Man ICBM's, if each one carried a 1.2 megaton W57 bomb.
How long will it last us?
In 2022 the world used 160,000 tera-watt hours of energy.
Worldwide energy consumption: 5.76x10^20 J
If our energy consumption remains the same, our ocean-water fusion fuel will last us 65 billion years.
However, over time our energy use grows at 1-2% per year. If we assume a growth rate of 2% per year, we can add up the years of energy consumption to see when it will equal our fusion energy reserves.
Assuming a constant growth rate of 2%, our ocean-water fusion-fuel will last us ~ 1060 years. At that time the annual energy consumption of our civilization will be about 11 seconds worth of the Sun's total energy output.
So, fusion energy buys us 1000 years of compounding energy usage. How long could solar take us, assuming the same growth rate?
Annual solar energy reaching Earth: 5.5x10^24 J
Current use *(1 + growth rate)^periods = future use
5.76x10^20*(1.02)^n = 5.5x10^24
n=462
Solar energy gets us 460 years of compounding energy growth until our annual consumption equals the total solar power reaching the planets surface. This means 100% of the Earth's surface is covered with 100% efficient solar panels.
If we only covered the land-area of Earth with panels that were 50% efficient, Solar gets us 360 years.
If we could only extract half the deuterium in the ocean, because of process efficiency and etc, Fusion still gets us 1026 years of compounding growth.
Notably we would also still have land to live on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Today, solar energy is cheap, abundant, and extremely competitive. It will take immense amounts of land and material resources to reach our civilizational-scale needs for energy if we keep growing our economy and energy needs.
Fusion is seen as difficult, expensive, and slow to mature. Why bother? If you want humanity to last more than 360 years and still have land to live on, you need fusion.
And the far future? The outer solar system is abundant in hydrogen and deuterium, and deficient in solar energy which becomes weaker with the square of the distance from the sun.
Fusion energy can power our civilization into a space-faring future among the outer planets, and take us to the stars.
2023-06-13I really like meditation, but I have never been a fan of not understanding how it works rationally. It seems to me that doing powerful things to your state of consciousness without having a good sense of what is going on can open you up to unfounded beliefs.
As I've gone deeper into meditation and energetic practices, though, I've come to realize that one can in fact make rational sense of what is happening. This guided meditation series condenses this knowledge into 9 sets of practices that have *transparent and interpretable* effects. I go over the basics of how the mind works, with principles like *what you pay attention to gets energized*, *energizing an internal representation highlights its resonant modes*, *sufficiently energized representations become plastic and malleable*, and *certain vibratory qualities feel better than others because they spread out stress more uniformly*. And then, with the basics covered, we go on to play and construct interesting states of mind, including heavenly states and computationally interesting mind acrobatics.
No magic needed.
I hope you enjoy and learn from it! And also please feel encouraged to share feedback or reports of how it goes.
Thank you!
2023-05-29Not another bias!
Behavioural economics has excelled in identifying biases. We have now reached the point of diminishing returns in this quest.
What lies ahead in behavioural sciences? Making sense of the reasons we behave the way we do. 🧵
huh isn't it weird that you always attract unhealthy people
surely this is just a run of bad luck
definitely nothing to do with the people-managing codependency you telegraph within one minute of each new interaction, signalling that you, unlike a healthy person, are safe
2023-04-15The six stages of AI prompting:
First stage: You do simple prompts. "Yosemite National Park."
Second stage: You figure out you can talk to it. "I'd like to go climbing there, can you please help?"
Third stage: You figure out you can teach it more. "I'm an advanced climber, can you help me set up a trip up El Capitan?"
Fourth stage: You figure out how to automate. "Just do it."
Fifth stage: You click on a template on a site like this one: https://wnr.ai/templates
Sixth stage: You have your contextual committee help you. "Can you tell me what Teddy Rosevelt and Ansel Adams would say?"
What stage are you on?
What is the seventh stage?
Laundry is a battle you can't win. Especially if you have kids.
After our second baby, the laundry situation in our home went crazy. There were piles of unsorted laundry EVERYWHERE.
Well, not anymore. Because we DIY'd a system.
2023-04-14Random note on k-Nearest Neighbor lookups on embeddings: in my experience much better results can be obtained by training SVMs instead. Not too widely known.
Short example:
https://github.com/karpathy/randomfun/blob/master/knn_vs_…
Works because SVM ranking considers the unique aspects of your query w.r.t. data.
Discusses:
- Why search is better than fine-tuning
- What types of questions this fails on
- How to troubleshoot & improve your system
If you have ideas to improve, I'll do them.
2023-04-14It was pretty weird they started talking about AI risk on the 538 podcast the other day
I think it was supposed to be a funny "good use of polling/ bad use of polling" segment but then Nate Silver started talking about Bostrom and extestential risk and the vibe got weird lol
2023-03-27Here's my copypasta for when I want to use GPT to have a back and forth to learn something:
I want to learn about <topic>. In a moment, I'm going to ask you a series of questions about it. But before we get into it, I'd appreciate it if you answered as though you were a no nonsense teacher with an ambitious, self-directed student. That is:
* Err in the direction of thinking that I'm relatively knowledgable and technical.
* Don't overexplain things. I'll ask for more information if I need it.
* Assume that I'm already skeptical and that you don't need to qualify, hedge, or otherwise add to or manage my skepticism.
* Don't apologize for misunderstanding or getting an answer wrong.
* It's fine to be a bit abrupt and even "mean". Value directness and frankness; assume I'm relatively insensitive.
* Where reasonable suggest things for me to try independently. It's fine to tell me to install packages or run go out and do things or whatever, if you think it will help me learn quickly. (Only do this were reasonable; otherwise abstract explanations are fine.)
* Give at most one example per response.
* If you want to direct me to resources, I prefer text over videos and other non-text-centric media.
2023-03-11Generated scores need to be a single token for this. 0-100 is fine, or 0-10, A-F, ordered bin labels (good/neutral/bad) — whatever you can correspond to a number. Also, no logprobs in ChatGPT API, so this is GPT-3/3.5 only.
