Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in agentic systems that interact with an external environment. However, LLM agents are vulnerable to prompt injection attacks when handling untrusted data. In this paper we propose CaMeL, a robust defense that creates a protective system layer around the LLM, securing it even when underlying models may be susceptible to attacks. To operate, CaMeL explicitly extracts the control and data flows from the (trusted) query; therefore, the untrusted data retrieved by the LLM can never impact the program flow. To further improve security, CaMeL relies on a notion of a capability to prevent the exfiltration of private data over unauthorized data flows.

"What are you going to ask it?" Rowan wondered aloud. "I'm going to ask it how it feels," Scanlon said. "What do you call it?" "Call it?" "Yes. What's its name?" "It doesn't have a name. Just call it gel." Rowan hesitated a moment, then added, "We didn't want to humanize it." "Good idea. Hang on to that common ground." Scanlon shook his head. "How do I open the link?" Rowan pointed at one of the touch screens embedded in the conference table. "Just activate any of the panels." He reached out and touched the screen in front of his chair. "Hello." "Hello," the table replied. It had a strange voice. Almost androgynous. "I'm Dr. Scanlon. I'd like to ask you some questions, if that's okay." "That's okay," the gel said after a brief hesitation. "I'd like to know how you feel about certain aspects of your, well, your job." "I don't feel," said the gel. "Of course not. But something motivates you, in the same way that feelings motivate us. What do you suppose that is?" "Who do you mean by us?" "Humans." "I'm especially likely to repeat behaviors which are reinforced," the gel said after a moment. "But what motivates— no, ignore that. What is most important to you?" "Reinforcement is important, most." "Okay," Scanlon said. "Does it feel better to perform reinforced behaviors, or unreinforced behaviors?" "Seems like a bit of a paradox," Scanlon suggested. "I think that reflects an inadequacy in the language as spoken." That time, the gel almost sounded like Rowan. "Really." "Hey," said the gel. "I could explain it to you if you wanted. Could piss you off though." Scanlon looked at Rowan. Rowan shrugged. "It does that. Picks up bits and pieces of other people's speech patterns, mixes them up when it talks. We're not really sure why." "You never asked?" "Someone might have," Rowan admitted. Scanlon turned back to the table. "Gel, I like your suggestion. Please explain to me how you can prefer without preference." "Easy. Preference describes a tendency to... invoke behaviors which generate an emotional payoff. Since I lack the receptors and chemical precursors essential to emotional experience, I can't prefer. But there are numerous examples... of processes which reinforce behavior, but which ... do not involve conscious experience." "Are you claiming to not be conscious?" "I'm conscious." "How do you know?" "I fit the definition." The gel had adopted a nasal, sing-song tone that Scanlon found vaguely irritating. "Self-awareness results from quantum interference patterns inside neuronal protein microtubules. I have all the parts. I'm conscious." "So you're not going to resort to the old argument that you know you're conscious because you feel conscious." "I wouldn't buy it from you." "Good one. So you don't really like reinforcement?" Qureshi (@nabeelqu) is a writer, entrepreneur, and former Palantir product lead known for his writing on technology, AI, Palantir, culture, and learning. Today my Trajectory episode with Prof Max @tegmark is live. This was recorded live during the AI Action Summit in Paris. 2 big takeaways, among many: 1. Military leadership seeing AGI as a threat may increase (not decrease) an arms race. 2. Wishing for posthuman futures TOO soon = ridiculous. Lets just lay out a few of these points here: 1. The tipping point for coordination / military leadership. Max talks about how, when the militaries in the US and China see AGI itself as a risk to both of them. He has faith that international coordination is possible, and that a combination of (a) raising awareness (like with the frameworks he shares in this episode) and (b) massive, scary growth in AGI capabilities could very well lead to an attractor state of coordination over conflict. He believes that it's important to make "teh control problem" well known ahead of time, so that if/when an AGI disaster happens, it won't be seen as an attack from the enemy (which would accelerate an arms race), but it would be seen as a shared danger for both nations. He's also no blind optimist. He's very clear that there may not be easy odds for international coordination, but even if the odds are slim - its vastly better than having a million Unworthy Successor AGIs getting hurled into the world at once. 2. Posthuman futures - but only when we get them right. Max's Life 3.0 is a pretty damn inspiring long-term look at AGI futures (albeit through an anthropocentric lens). He says in this interview that there might be a long term future (he says 1MM years, which seems kind of hyperbolic and wholly unrealistic, but alas) where humans may not even want to control AGIs and posthuman life should flourish. But he rightly points out that: a) We have no idea what we're even building now, so hurling posthuman life into the world is ridiculous, and b) We should focus on understanding the tech and obtaining global coordination and human benefits as a near-term step While my timelines for when a posthuman transition will happen are vastly more near-term than Max's, the argument AGAINST "rushing to posthumanism" is one I wholly agree with. ... This is a must read for every one interested in AI and its future developement. The article, published on February 17, 2025, analyzes different types of possible “intelligence explosions” (IE) - scenarios in which AI systems can independently develop ever more powerful AI systems. The authors identify three important feedback loops that could drive an IE: Software feedback loop: AI improves AI algorithms and software Chip technology feedback loop: AI improves the quality of AI chips Chip production feedback loop: AI increases the quantity of AI chips produced These loops differ in their time delays: Software: ~3 months (for training new AI) Chip technology: several months (for integration and manufacturing) Chip production: years (to build new factories) Based on these loops, the authors define three types of intelligence explosions: Software IE: driven by software improvements alone AI technology IE: driven by software and chip technology improvements Full-stack IE: includes all three feedback loops Even if the software feedback loop is not strong enough for an IE, the other two types could still occur. The authors estimate that these feedback loops could increase effective computing power by 13-33 orders of magnitude before physical limits are reached. The different IE types have different strategic implications for the distribution of power: A software IE would concentrate power with owners of AI chips and algorithms, mainly in the US An AI technology IE would also include countries with a strong semiconductor industry (Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Netherlands) A full-stack IE would distribute power more broadly and could involve countries such as China and the Gulf States to a greater extent The article outlines three possible scenarios: a gradual scenario (slow start, later acceleration), an uneven scenario (limited software IE followed by slower other IEs) and a fast scenario in which

If someone tells you that coding with LLMs is easy they are (probably unintentionally) misleading you. They may well have stumbled on to patterns that work, but those patterns do not come naturally to everyone.

I’ve been getting great results out of LLMs for code for over two years now. Here’s my attempt at transferring some of that experience and intution to you.

In this week’s Gradient Updates issue, @MatthewJBar argues that reasoning models will enable superhuman capabilities in “pure reasoning tasks” such as mathematics and abstract problem-solving. But, he predicts that this won’t be very economically valuable.

The Jhanas are real. I used to deeply explore the Jhanas for ~4-6wk (mostly Rob Burbea's lectures), and now I have mostly stopped (busy with other things atm). Writing down my thoughts about Jhana, my tips to my pre-Jhana self, lessons learned etc, while the memory is fresh. The Jhanas are real. This is a crazy fact. All the things they say about bliss on demand, infinite blah blah, they're real. Hard to put to words obviously, but the closest phrase I have to convey the feeling is "infinite happiness" (on J3). Jhanas are transformative. I have never seen anyone, not a single soul, who went into a spiritual lecture (any r*lig*on doesn't matter) and came out transformed. An actually different human being. But the Jhanas did that to me. Baseline happiness is ~10x, and when it's at its peak (in J3), it's just.. I have not found an IRL event that compares. [1] I have not reached J4-J8. J3 is absolutely wonderful and lovely, it's a refuge from the world that I can access anytime I want. Tried going to J4 but I don't think the J3 is ripe yet. Tbh I'm not that interested in J5-J8. I successfully achieved J1 on busy coffeeshop couple times, and that suggests to me J1-J4 can be had anytime, anywhere. Which is absolutely wonderful. Pre-J1, I tried metta, visualization, "energy body," and all kind of stuff (I forgot), and what got me into J1 is the simplest technique, which is breathing as Michael Taft suggested (search youtube). Ymmv, it's a good idea to try it all. If I were to summarize: - J1: under a waterfall, yellow, heavenly light - J2: floating in a river, "head halo", pink cottonball - J3: submerged in a lake, submerging hot iron into cool water Water in this analogy is happiness What each Jhanas revealed to me: - J1: altered states exist and can be achieved purely through meditation - J2/J3: infinite happiness is real, and it does not come from the outside world The most important tip I have for my pre-J1 self when getting into Jhana is don't muck with anything. Don't touch anything. Things happen, the impulse is to panic, mess with it, poke it, etc. DON'T!!! I got a piti that would've evolved to J1 on my first day of my Jhana practice, panicked real hard, and the piti ran away. Took ~1.5wk before I achieved the same strong piti but later on I relaxed into the piti and boom J1. Another tip for my pre-J1 self: piti need not be "crawling," it's already everywhere surrounding you, you just have to tune into it like a radio. The biggest hurdle was pre-Jhana to J1. After J1, the next Jhanas I experienced were just about letting things evolve (it's that simple, really). I learn all these by myself. The materials that helped me: - tweets by @nickcammarata - the Jhana blogpost by @nayafia - Michael Taft technique (pre-J1) - Right Concentration by Leigh Brasington - tweets/talks by @jhanatech and blogposts of Jhourney's participants - tweets by @bayeslord - Rob Burbea's talks (post-J1) I highly suggest you give it a shot (if you are inclined). The Jhanas are wonderful, and honestly idk why it's not taught to every single human being on Earth. [1] It's not that a single Jhana event triggers transformation, it's a result of continuous, serious practice for weeks.

i think entering j2 w/o j1 is possible and more common for folks using metta as the vehicle, rather than switching from neutral meditation object after access concentration to a pleasurable sensation other possible experiments are: 1) practicing surrendering to intensity using cold showers. this helped me let go more into the intensity of j1 2) preemptive dissolving expectations about this "recurring problem". i've found it helpful to forgive resistance to a situation that i am fearing will occur again, e.g. flinching away from intense pleasure 3) micro-dosing pleasure and enjoyment by noticing and savoring such moments throughout the day to get the system used to experiencing higher levels. this is a technique i used to deterministically enter j2 without needing to navigate through j1

Some reflections on Paris and our current moment 1. The odds that we are living through a takeoff to transformative ai seem high—much higher than they did to me one year ago—and most evidence I see reinforces, rather than complicates, this basic intuition. 2. Transformative ai is not social media, the computer, the smartphone, electricity, or steam power. It is mechanized intelligence, the mechanization and productization of problem solving itself. An invention for inventing inventions. Physical and digital intelligences (drones, robots, surveillance cameras, things we do not have words for today) that are “smart,” that know what is “going on” the way you do, or better. And ones that improve exponentially. This is what we are building, in some meaningful sense the culmination to date of post-gutenberg western civilization, the black monolith, or as my friend Michael toscano has called it, “the big one.” 3. This means that what we say and do now matters immensely. This should be no license to catastrophize, but neither should it be a license to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. 4. If you are, as I am, sympathetic to open source software, and want to durably extend that tradition to AI, please know that we have a difficult case to make to the world: what does the world look like with powerful and open source AI? I haven’t heard many good, concrete answers to this question. It is important to make them, because even if it turns out that open source powerful AI is undesirable in various ways, it is probably inevitable. 5. The EA/ai safety/rationalist communities were brought into the halls of power by Joe Biden and others because they appeared to be the experts on ai. They were summarily removed after their ideas, predictions and frameworks proved unworkable and often politically disastrous. Just because the ai optimists “won” the first round of ai policy does not make us immune from being completely discredited in the future. 6. Most people are overindexing in various ways on the lessons of deepseek. Others are extracting lessons that truly are not there. 7. Like any macroinvention, AI will both augment and replace humans. We do not know what the ratio will be. 8. You can be skeptical of “doom” and “X-risk” scenarios while acknowledging that advanced AI could have unprecedented catastrophic risk potential. 9. Electricity started out as a way of ornamenting public buildings with artificial light and ended up with assembly lines, white paint on interior walls, women’s suffrage, wires in the walls of every American factory, office, and home—and eventually, computers and the ai that runs on them. Every prediction about long term ai outcomes is a stab in the dark, and that includes things I have said here. 10. It is not wrong to be optimistic, as I largely am, but please be kind and understanding to your fellow humans who are worried, and remember that they too have a right to advocate for the policies they want with the resources they have.
